From Canada to the Netherlands
Who are you and where are you from?
My name Is Maureen and I am originally from Canada.
Where do you live now?
I live in the Netherlands.
Do you live with your family?
I live with my husband and my daughter.
How old are you?
42.
Share your reason for leaving your country.
Well to be honest I was not liking the way my own country was treating me and I was looking for a prince charming so to speak that treated me better then the two marriages that ended badly in divorce!
Were the adjustments difficult?
Most of the adjustments were not so terrible. Till I had my daughter. I find that the doctors over here are a joke! The language was a huge failure for me since I was never good in school to begin with.
What was the immigration process like (visas, work permits, residency, etc.)?
Immigration for me was not so bad...a lot of papers to be filled out again and again....costs alot of money, which I found hard for my husband to pay for because I have been pretty independant since I was 18.
Do you work?
No. I am over 40 and they would rather hire someone way younger so that they dont have to pay high wages, and because the language is difficult for me. You have to know the language to get a job here.
What are the pros and cons of living in your new country?
Pros:
Yummy pies and chocolates.
Cons:
Missing my parents and my outside family and friends...and getting homesick alot! And dealing with some very selfish people...!!!
Do you miss 'home'? How often do you visit?
Yes, I miss home almost every day. I visit Canada once a year.
Any advice to share?
If you don't have to leave your own country don't do it. The price is just to high in the end to pay so to speak! |
